Google ‘Instant Previews’ Function Come to iOS Safari

Google has finally brought their helpful ‘Instant Previews’ feature from the desktop browser, down to the mobile experience. ‘Instant Previews’ lets you tap the accompanying magnifying for a pop-up preview of the website. This saves you time, as now you can get a quick glance at the site without actually having to load up the page. The neat part about Google’s implementation in iOS Safari is that you can flick through the previews of a particular search query, like you flick through iOS’s native Safari tabs function.

At this time it does not look like the new Google ‘Instant Previews’ feature for iOS has hit all user devices, as the feature is yet to appear on our iPhone 4 or iPad. Google has yet to announce the ‘Instant Previews’ feature for mobile, so this could be an early and/or limited rollout.

Google Planning Event to Show Off Android 3.0 Honeycomb Next Week

While some hands-on demonstrations of the Motorola XOOM and an extensive walkthrough at Verizon's CES keynote gave us a good taste of what Android 3.0 Honeycomb will bring in terms of change to the operating system, Google is planning an event to give an even deeper look at the new version of its mobile platform. While Android aficionados are busy picking apart the Honeycomb SDK preview that just came online this week, Andy Rubin and crew are gearing up to give the masses a bit more.

The event, which will take place next Wednesday in Mountain View, CA, will see Rubin first present his take on the new OS followed by plenty of hands-on time with Honeycomb. We are assuming Google has reached a more stable build than the untouchable version featured on the XOOM at CES.

While you could say there isn't much more we could discover about Honeycomb, we are sure Rubin and crew have some surprises up their sleeves. Could this event coincide with a launch of a new web-based Android Market? Google Music? Or will the proceedings be squarely focused on showing off just how awesome Honeycomb really is?

HP Mini 1103 Education Netbook Reviewed: Not Bad For $299

The HP Mini 1103 is the cheapest netbook HP currently offers for the business and education markets. If the mini-laptop looks familiar, that’s because it’s case design is nearly identical in most respects to the latest HP Mini 210. But the Mini 1103 has distinct left and right mouse buttons instead of buttons integrated into the touchpad, and it lacks an island-style keyboard.

The folks at Laptop Magazine have published a review of the HP Mini 1103, and they seem reasonably impressed with the little guy. Sure, with a single core Atom processor and integrated graphics, it’s not the most powerful netbook around. But it has a relatively fast 7200RPM hard drive and gets well over 8 hours of battery life, which isn’t bad at all for a netbook with a starting price of $299 .

While the netbook is designed for business and education, it’s also available for consumers to purchase. The basic configuration includes a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N455 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive and Windows 7 Starter Edition.

Enspert E201 Android tablet on sale Feb 1st for Price $349

Dynamism has announced it will begin taking pre-orders for the Enspert E201 Android tablet on February 1st, with delivery expected to start a few weeks later.

The Enspert E301 is one of the more interesting tablets I saw at CES this year thanks to its nice build quality and high resolution 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display. Unfortunately that’s not the version Dynamism is bringing to the US. Instead we’ll get the Enspert E201, which has a 7 inch 800 x 480 pixel display.

That said, the tablet has a few things going for it, including a capacitive touchscreen, a 1 GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, front and rear-facing cameras, and runs Google Android 2.2. Perhaps most importantly, it’s certified for Google Mobile Services including the Android Market and official Gmail app. The tablet also has an HDMI port for displaying HD video on an external display.

The Enspert E201 supports WiFi and Bluetooth. There’s no 3G option.

Dynamism says its first shipment will arrive on February 15th, with customer delivery scheduled after that. The tablet will sell in the US for $349.

Redsn0w 0.9.7 for Windows will Untether iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak with iOS 4.1, Coming Soon

As we know Untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak is possible with Jailbreak Monte technique for Mac OS X. But this jailbreak process requires iOS 4.2 Beta 2 hashes and iOS 4.2 Beta 2 which is only for developers. Now we came to know that you will be able to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with iOS 4.1 IPSW instead of iOS 4.2b3 firmware and SHSH blobs soon.

Since Apple still serves the 4.1 IPSW (not blobs!), we’ll do a Windows redsn0w release for untethered 4.2.1 via Monte-4.1
According to iPhone Dev Team, they are going to release a Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 which will allow you to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with iOS 4.1 IPSW instead of iOS 4.2b3 firmware and SHSH blobs. You should remember this jailbreaking process will be slow because Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 will not use RAM, it will use filesystem

Please don’t complain too loudly about how slow it takes :) The Win version uses filesystem instead of RAM: slow!
Well, the good news is using the Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 you will be able to untether jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with iOS 4.1 IPSW without using iOS 4.2 Beta 2 hashes and iOS 4.2 Beta 2. We are hopping Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 will release soon.

Asus Eee Slate EP121 up for pre-order

Asus introduced 4 slate-style computers this afternoon — but three of them won’t be available until Google launches the next version of its Android operating system, code-named Honeycomb. That’s not expected to happen for a few more months. But Asus will begin shipping the Eee Slate EP121 soon. This 12.1 inch tablet runs Windows 7, which means it’s pretty much ready to go.

Asus is taking pre-orders for 32GB and 64GB versions of the EP121. You can sign up at Amazon.com. The only catch? There’s no final pricing yet, although Asus expects the tablet to sell for $999 to $1099. Update: As expected, the 32GB model will run $999, while the 64GB version costs $1099.99.
The Eee Slate EP121 has a 12.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel IPS capacitive touchscreen display and an Intel Core i5-470UM processor. It runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and is available with 2GB to 4GB of RAM. It supports 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, a mini-HDMI port, flash card reader, USB port, and 2MP webcam.

Microsoft wants Intel to develop 16-core Atom chips

There’s a common misperception that multi-core chips are always more powerful than single-core computer chips. But the truth of the matter is that while multi-core chips can be faster than their old school brethren, especially when used with software optimized for multithreading, there’s another reason to develop chips with multiple cores: They can use less power.

Without getting too deep into the math, basically a quad-core chip running at 200 MHz can offer similar performance to a single core chip running at 1 GHz under some circumstances — but it can achieve that while running at a lower voltage. And that means it uses less energy, saving money and prolonging battery life.

So a recent report from PC World that Microsoft is asking Intel to bring a 16-core Atom chip to market doesn’t mean that Microsoft thinks Intel should make its low power Atom chips insanely powerful. Rather, the idea is that Intel’s Atom platform could be even more energy efficient with 8 times more cores than are currently available.

Microsoft says the solution would be used in its data centers, providing enough power to run the company’s Windows Live web apps while using less energy than current chips.

Intel isn’t the only player in the server space. AMD and VIA also offer x86 chips for servers, including low power chips such as the VIA Nano processor, and ARM-based chips, which have been making serious headway in the consumer tablet space, are also starting to infiltrate the server space.

Sony PS3 Games To Receive Cloud Saving Feature

Sony are going ahead with a plan to implement Cloud-based game saving that they’ve been considering since 2009, a Kotaku report claims.

However, Sony are living up to their reputation of being much better at stripping features out of their console than putting them in, since the whole Cloud save thing involves a few catches not everyone may be comfortable with.
First off, you need to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber because having your game saves accessible from anywhere is a privilege, not a right. They had to make it attractive somehow and I don’t see them offering multiplayer only to PlayStation Plus subscribers Microsoft-style anytime soon.

But the deathblow to their scheme is probably the fact that they’re leaving it up to developers whether to implement the feature or not. And developers have a well-known penchant for implementing features that only benefit the platform-holder’s premium subscription service and just add development time and expenses, right?

Windows 8 is coming in the next two years

Just as you were getting comfortable with Windows 7, it looks like Windows 8 is coming in the next two years. In a post celebrating the one-year anniversary of Windows 7 -- the fastest selling OS in history -- Microsoft's Dutch Web site briefly mentioned the construction and release of its successor:
"Microsoft is on course for the next version of Windows. But it will take about two years before 'Windows 8' on the market." Winrumors.com grabbed and translated the post, and CNET took a screenshot of the text, which unsurprisingly disappeared shortly after the news stole headlines. Now Microsoft is back to being tight-lipped about Windows 8 and its expected release.
Reports from last year suggested Microsoft was building a 128-bit version of its OS, which could very likely be Windows 8. More recently, NetworkWorld acquired more than 15 confidential slide decks detailing possible additions, including body-sensing features similar to the Xbox Kinect, a desktop app store like Apple's forthcoming Mac App Store, near-instant CPU booting, and a focus on powering tablets.
But most importantly, by the time Windows 8 supposedly drops, Microsoft is going to have Apple's latest OS to contend with. Verizon to offer hotspot tethering for $20 a month, says unlimited data plans are temporary

Verizon has clarified that its unlimited data option for the iPhone will be offered temporarily and that the company will eventually adopt a tiered data structure similar to AT&T's.

Verizon has confirmed that its mobile hotspot option for the iPhone 4 will be available for an extra $20 per month, according to MacWorld. The “personal hotspot” will allow up to five Wi-Fi-ready devices to share an iPhone 4′s 3G data connection.

Verizon also announced that the hotspot feature will come with an extra 2GB a month, which will be entirely separate from the basic data plan. But be forewarned: if you go over the 2GB limit, every extra gigabyte will cost an additional $20.

AT&T currently supports iPhone tethering, but only for a single device tethered through a USB or Bluetooth connection. AT&T also charges $20 a month for the feature, but doesn’t include any additional gigs to cover tethering — all data used from tethering counts against a customer’s basic data plan. It’s suspected that Apple may include the five-device hotspot feature as part of its iOS 4.3 upgrade.

Verizon’s chief operating officer Lowell McAdam has also added a caveat to his announcement on Tuesday that his company will offer an unlimited data plan for the iPhone 4: unlimited data plans won’t be offered indefinitely. McAdam has now said Verizon will eventually drop unlimited plans and move to adopt a tiered data structure in the “not too distant future.”

AT&T offered an unlimited data option for the iPhone before switching to a tiered data structure last year. Users who had existing unlimited data plans were able to retain their contracts and are being grandfathered in to AT&T’s new data structure. It’s not clear if Verizon will adopt a similar approach once the company drops its unlimited data option.

Verizon is set to begin offering the iPhone 4 on February 10.

Chrome And Firefox Add “Do Not Tack” Tools To Their Browsers

In a move to stop advertisers being able to track your every move and publish personalised adverts as you browse the Internet. Google and Mozilla will be adding a new set of tools/extensions to their Chrome and Firefox browsers. Following the advice from the FTC to add a Do Not Track options. Microsoft has also said its plans to add a Do Not Track feature to its browser but hasn’t released any details as yet.

The new features being add to the Chrome and Firefox browsers will allow users to tick a box to disable the automatic browsing history that is then used to send out targeted ads. With Google and Mozilla taking slightly different approaches to its implementation.

Google’s solution to the problem is Keep My Opt-Outs, a Chrome extension, that allows users to permanently opt out from tracking cookies and flash cookies. But this method does unfortunately rely on cookies and ad networks and sites need to recognise the wish not to track browsing

Firefox’s new feature explained by Global Privacy and Public Policy Leader at Mozilla, Alex Fowler, will allow users to set a preference that will broadcast their desire to opt out of ad-based tracking. This will be signalled via a Do Not Track HTTP header with every page view or click they make.

Firefox believe that the header-based approach has the potential to be better for the web in the long run because it is a clearer and more universal than the use if cookies or blacklists.

Microsoft has also said its plans to add a Do Not Track feature to its browser but hasn’t released any details as yet.
