Confirmed Apple To Release iOS 4.2 Today

Apple has just confirmed the release date of iOS 4.2 to be launched today for all iOS users and will be available at approximately 10 a.m. Pacific Time. Here's the full press release below.

CUPERTINO, California—November 22, 2010—Apple® today announced that iOS 4.2, the latest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, is available today for download for iPad™, iPhone® and iPod touch®. iOS 4.2 brings over 100 new features from iOS 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 to iPad including Multitasking, Folders, Unified Inbox, Game Center, AirPlay® and AirPrint.

“iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit.”

iPad users can now run their favorite apps and switch between them instantly, while preserving iPad’s legendary battery life. Users can organize their apps with drag-and-drop simplicity using Folders, and Mail now features a Unified Inbox, fast inbox switching and a threaded message view.

Game Center allows iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users to challenge and play friends or be matched automatically with new opponents, showcase their scores and achievements, and discover new games their friends are playing.

AirPlay is a new feature for streaming music, video and photos wirelessly from iPad, iPhone and iPod touch to Apple TV®, transforming Apple TV into a great accessory for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. iOS users also will be able to use AirPort Express® and AirPlay to stream wirelessly to any stereo or powered speakers, or directly to AirPlay-enabled speakers coming to market in the months ahead.

AirPrint is a next-generation Wi-Fi print architecture that dramatically simplifies printing by completely eliminating printer drivers. A selection of AirPrint enabled printers including the HP Photosmart, HP LaserJet Pro and HP Officejet will be the first to support printing direct from iOS devices. iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly to any printer that supports AirPrint.

The Find My iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) feature is now free to use without a MobileMe℠ subscription and helps you locate your missing device.* The Find My iPhone app is a free download on the App Store℠ and lets users easily locate a missing device on a map and have it display a message or play a sound. Users can even remotely lock or wipe data from a lost device to protect privacy.

Other new features that iOS 4.2 brings to the iPad include: the ability to rent TV episodes directly to iPad using the iTunes® App with a 30 day viewing window and a 48 hour session window once playback is started; the ability to easily find and highlight specific words and phrases on web pages in Safari®; enhanced enterprise support so businesses can take advantage of stronger security features, new device management capabilities and improved enterprise integration; industry-leading accessibility enhancements; and support for 25 additional languages, including Korean, Portuguese and Traditional Chinese.

The revolutionary iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. You can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, using the innovative Multi-Touch™ user interface. iPad weighs just 1.5 pounds, making it easy to carry and use anywhere.

Today, customers have downloaded more than seven billion apps from the groundbreaking App Store and more than 300,000 apps are available to consumers in 90 countries, with more than 40,000 native iPad apps. Over 125 million iOS users around the world can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel.

Availability
The iOS 4.2 update is available today to download to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch by syncing the device with iTunes 10.1. iOS 4.2 is compatible with iPad, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, second and third generation iPod touch (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB) and new iPod touch. Some features may not be available on all products. For example, Multitasking requires iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, third generation iPod touch (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB) or later.

*The free Find My iPhone feature is available for iPhone 4, iPad or new iPod touch (4th generation).

Apple to Offer Free MobileMe Service to Some iOS Users?

Earlier this month, we noted that the original golden master version of iOS 4.2 appeared to be preparing to allow users to sign in to MobileMe using their Apple IDs and even offer users the ability create a free Apple ID right from the MobileMe settings page in iOS. At the time, we cautioned about reading too much into the change but speculated that Apple could be looking at bringing some of the features of the paid MobileMe service to a new free offering tied to users' Apple IDs. At a minimum, it appeared that Apple was looking to create a consolidated login to allow MobileMe users to access features with their Apple IDs.

New evidence uncovered in recent iOS 4.2 builds and the iOS 4.2.1 golden master seed is suggesting, however, that Apple will be offering a free MobileMe tier to users. The evidence comes in the form of a new private framework known as AppleAccounts.framework that includes a series of device-specific error messages referring to free MobileMe accounts. In particular, the error messages include alerts regarding having reached "the maximum number of free accounts" for a given device and certain devices not being "qualified for free MobileMe service".

The framework has been localized for dozens of languages and countries, and is not present in the currently-shipping iOS 4.1. Meanwhile, an error message in another part of iOS suggests that free accounts may be used for features other than email, as an error message specifically restricts certain Apple IDs from being used with MobileMe Mail:

"This Apple ID cannot be used for MobileMe Mail, but you can use it for other MobileMe services."

Other MobileMe iPhone services include Find My iPhone, iDisk, Contact/Calendar/Safari/Notes over-the-air sync, and Photo Galleries.

Capture High Quality Screenshots in Google Chrome [Extension]

At ZoOMwAP, we are huge fans of screenshots. We pride ourselves in taking high-quality screenshots, so naturally, we favor applications
that smoothen this process. Google Chrome has quite a few great applications that allow a user to take nice screenshots, annotate and modify them and then share with others. However, one feature where Awesome Screenshot takes the prize is the ability to blur areas within images. This handy little extension for Google Chrome can capture, annotate and edit and share/save the screenshots with ease.

When you click the extension’s icon in your browser’s navigation bar, you get the option to either capture the visible area of the screen, capture a selected area or grab the whole page. Selecting one of these options will take you to the edit mode, where you can modify your image to your liking.

The screenshot below shows Awesome Screenshot’s annotate and edit window, with effects added using this extension and toolbar showing the available functions.

Once you hit the ‘Done’ button, you can either download the image to your local machine, or upload it to get a shareable link for others. You can also revisit the image to do some more editing if you feel something was left amiss. Screenshots can be saved in lossless PNG format and supports shortcuts (can be changed from extension options).

Awesome Screenshot was tested on Google Chrome 7.0.517.44.

Virgin Mobile launching $20/month 1GB MiFi plans tomorrow at Walmart

With the booming popularity of mobile devices like the iPad and netbooks, data carriers are trying to push sales of MiFi devices as much as they can. MiFi devices are small, mobile WiFi hotspots that turn a carriers 3G connection into a WiFi connection for nearby devices.

Tomorrow, Virgin Mobile will be launching a very affordable $20/month for 1GB data plan exclusive to MiFi devices sold at Walmart stores or Walmart.com. The plan for the Broadband2Go mobile broadband service works with the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2200 device or Ovation MC760 USB. Virgin Mobile’s plans are typically contract-free and are on a month-to-month basis.

1GB is a good amount of data for the average computer user. You can compare this to the 2GB plans for Apple’s iPad WiFi + 3G on AT&T which is claimed to be enough for 95% of users. The plans can be setup starting tomorrow on Virgin Mobile’s website with a credit card or one of the carrier’s Top-Up cards.

Broadband2Go mobile broadband service utilizes Sprint’s renowned 3G service that serves over 262 million people. Sprint’s 3G speeds are generally very speedy and according to Virgin Mobile’s website the service attains speeds between 600 and 1400 Kbps.

Google Docs Finally Comes to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Google has just announced the release of a new documents editor for Google Docs, which will allow users to edit documents on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The previous mobile version of Google Docs allowed users to view documents in read-only mode. So by offering Google Docs on the iDevice, Google will be able to compete with Apple’s popular iWorks suite of apps for the iPad and other third party apps such as Documents to Go and Quickoffice that have been offering this capability for quite sometime now.

Now, since Google Docs will be free, it could be on the top of these apps offering the same feature.

That means that...
  • You can work on that important memo...while on the bus or train to work.
  • If you’re behind on a group proposal, but really want to make it to the ball game tonight, your whole team can work on it from the bleacher seats.
  • You can take minute-by-minute notes at a concert so you’ll always remember the setlist. And your friends can jealously follow in real-time at home.
  • ...and the list goes on!
If you’re a Google Docs users, you can check it out by pointing your iDevice’s Safari browser (iOS 3.0 or later) to docs.google.com and selecting the document that you want to edit.

So, will you give up other apps and be one of Google Docs users? Or you prefer using Apple’s iWork suite of apps or one of the other third party apps?

Dell's Hybrid Tablet Coming Next Week [REPORT]

Dell Inspiron Duo, the hybrid tablet that flips open to become a netbook, is due for a launch next week, Cnet has learned from sources familiar with the matter.

The Duo is a Windows 7 machine with a dual core Intel Atom CPU, a 10-inch touchscreen, and a full QWERTY keyboard which is revealed when you flip the lid open. Close it, and you have a device that looks and operates pretty much like a regular tablet.

According to Cnet, the Inspiron Duo will be launched "early next week", possibly on November 23.

Check out a teaser trailer for Dell Inspiron Duo below.

Toshiba Libretto W100 Dual-Screen Laptop

The iPad's single screen simply not cutting it for you? Perhaps you'd rather pick up a Toshiba Libretto W100 Dual-Screen Laptop ($TBA). Looking like the child of some secret Windows-obsessed mad scientist, the Libretto sports two 7-inch multitouch screens crammed into a 1.5 lb. laptop-like form factor, complete with a multi-mode virtual keyboard, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11n wireless networking, an Intel Pentium processor (they still make those?), and a built-in webcam — take that, Apple.

HTC Trophy with Windows Phone 7 coming to Verizon in 'early 2011'

It's unclear whether Verizon will ever get HTC's 7 Pro, but it's a lock that Big Red will eventually have some manner of Windows Phone 7 gear in its lineup -- and now we've got one in the flesh. Looks like HTC will be remixing the Trophy for use on CDMA networks, featuring a 3.8-inch WVGA display, 5 megapixel cam, 16GB of storage, and 802.11n, and Verizon is circulating a brochure for Microsoft employees saying they'll be able to buy the Trophy in "early 2011" for $199.99 at launch when they renew their contracts now (they'll also get a leather case and a car charger for free, but hey, they're Microsofties). Oh, and that's not the best part: the Trophy is also identified as being a "quad band global phone," meaning you'll be able to roam on GSM networks when you leave the US behind -- a feature Verizon seems to be pushing pretty hard across its smartphone lineup now. Follow the break for a bigger version of the pamphlet.

Apple releases second iOS 4.2 gold master to developer community

Late Friday, Apple released a second gold master of iOS 4.2, its forthcoming software update, which may address Wi-Fi connectivity issues some have reported with the iPad.

Per AppleInsider, the new build, dubbed 8C134b, has replaced the previous gold master released to developers on November 1st. Typically a gold master issued to developers is identical to the version that eventually becomes the final release.

It is unknown what changes have been made in the second gold master, though it’s possible the latest version could be to address Wi-Fi issues that some users experienced with the pre-release build. Recent reports have claimed that Apple hoped to release iOS 4.2 sooner, but was forced to push back the launch to address issues with the software.

Regardless of whether the software has actually been “delayed” from Apple’s own internal launch goals, it has become increasingly apparent that there are issues with iOS 4.2. In addition to the Wi-Fi problems reported by testers of the first golden master, Apple has also cut features from AirPrint — specifically, the ability to print to a shared printer through a Mac or Windows machine.

Printer sharing was supposed to be a part of Mac OS X 10.6.5, but the software was released Wednesday without any official support for sharing a printer with iOS devices. The recently released iTunes 10.1 update was supposed to allow shared printers for Windows users, but the update arrived Friday also without mention of AirPrint.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

Intel hikes dividend again despite tech worries

SAN FRANCISCO – Intel Corp. is confident enough in the stability of its moneymaking skills to raise its dividend by 15 percent, even as Wall Street braces for a bumpy ride for the technology industry.

The chip-maker's announcement Friday comes on the heels of a downcast description of the technology market by Cisco Systems Inc. Cisco dragged down stocks this week with a warning that government spending — especially at the state and local level — has suddenly turned sluggish. Many investors are worried that other technology companies are in line for a beating over the next several quarters and that the problems will spread to other industries.

Intel's dividend hike, the fourth since the Great Recession started in late 2007, is less a reflection of the company's optimism about the market than a reminder of its unique advantages in the computing industry. It also underscores the fact that many large companies have been sitting on piles of cash for the past three years and have been pouring some of the money back into their dividends to appease skittish shareholders.

According to Capital IQ Quantitative Research, nearly half of the companies in the S&P 500 have raised their dividend since the end of 2007, while only a fifth cut theirs.

Intel itself has warned recently about tough times in its business of selling microprocessors, the "brains" of personal computers and servers. But at the same time, it commands 80 percent of the market for those chips and is in the desirable position of owning its own factories, which means it can make better chips cheaper than its competitors.

Although the factories are expensive, requiring frequent multibillion-dollar upgrades, Intel has been able to put in technological advances — such as new techniques for shrinking the size of the circuitry on its chips — to help the company wring out more profit from its chips.

"I wouldn't necessarily say that Intel's bullish," said Patrick Wang, a semiconductor analyst with Wedbush Securities. Wang added that Intel will make investors feel better in returning cash to them, even though it isn't a reflection of Intel feeling exuberant about the market.

Intel shares rose 32 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $21.53. But the company's upbeat comments couldn't lift the broader market. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 90.52, or 0.8 percent, to 11,192.58 on news that China might try to slow its surging economy to combat inflation.

As a barometer for the tech sector, Intel has flashed some mixed signals over the past few months.

Back in August, the company cut its quarterly sales forecast, citing "weaker than expected demand for consumer PCs in mature markets," including the U.S. and Europe. Then last month it offered a more encouraging fourth-quarter forecast that met expectations.

The move to raise its dividend Friday provided a counterpoint to Cisco's weak projections.

On Wednesday, Cisco said that new orders during the most recent quarter fell short of the company's expectations. It forecast revenue growth for the quarter ending in January at just 3 percent to 5 percent over last year, less than half the growth rate analysts expected. Some analysts have noted that while Cisco's problems are an omen for much of the tech world, its networking equipment can be very expensive. Analysts say companies selling cheaper products might not experience as severe a slowdown in sales.

Cisco, which provides big companies, government agencies and service providers with the equipment that routes data over the Internet, has announced plans for a dividend, though the exact size isn't yet known and will depend on tax laws and market conditions. Cisco is sitting on $38.9 billion in cash and cash equivalents, much of it stuck abroad and not being used for investments in the U.S. as companies such as Cisco pressure the government to lower taxes on money made outside the U.S. and brought back stateside.

Oracle Corp., one of the world's biggest business software makers, began paying a dividend last year.

Since the recession started, Intel's quarterly dividend has grown to 15.75 cents per share, from 11.25 cents per share. On Friday, the company announced it was extending that further to 18 cents per share, a total increase of 60 percent over the past three years. CEO Paul Otellini said the company "remains on track to have our best year ever and we continue to generate strong cash flows."

Intel, whose stock is a component of the Dow Jones industrial average, has one of that group's highest-yielding dividends. Intel's annual yield currently stands at 3 percent of its stock price. Intel said the new dividend will take effect in the first quarter of next year. The company ended the latest quarter with nearly $15 billion in cash and short-term investments, nearly $3 billion more than it had the quarter before.

Intel is taking in far more than it's giving back through the dividend. At the new, higher rate, Intel will be paying about $1 billion a quarter in dividends, based on the latest share count. That's up from about $900 million per quarter at the lower rate.

Doug Freedman, an analyst with Gleacher & Co., said Intel's boost was higher than he expected. He noted that as the semiconductor and other tech industries have matured, and the supercharged growth of the dot-com days and earlier eras has slipped away, dividends have become more important as a way to reward investment.

"If you're investing in tech, you really need to start paying more attention to dividend yields as much as you want to pay attention to growth," Freedman said. "What Intel's doing with their dividend is more about their business model than optimism about the market or top-line numbers. With no growth, Intel can support that dividend yield."

You Can Now Enable HD Video Recording on iPhone 3GS ! [Jailbreak Req.]

Here is a way to get the phone to record video (and playback on the iPhone) at 1080×800 @ 30fps at up to 20Mbps. (up from the original 640×480 @ 3Mbps) (I am using the non-standard 1080×800 in order to keep the video at the right aspect ratio)

For the truly impatient: download the pre-edited file HDVideo3GS.zip.
Jailbreak your device and install SSH
Copy N88AP.plist to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/
Copy the 3 other plist files to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Celestial.framework/N88/
Reboot your iPhone 3GS

One quick look at the ARM Cortex processor that the 3GS uses [PDF Spec], it’s apparent that the chip is capable of handling 720p video encoding. So all we need to do is by-pass the artificial limitation Apple has imposed on the hardware.

Here is how:
I am assuming your iOS device is running firmware 4.1, I have not tested this with older versions of iOS
Jailbreak your 3G/3GS with limerain or greenpoison. Install OpenSSH via Cydia.
SSH into your phone using the root account
Open /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Celestial.framework/N88/AVCapture.plist with a Plist editor
Under the AVCaptureMode_AudioVideoRecording key, set the width and height for the capture key to 1080×800, respectively. This value controls the dimension of the video it is encoded at.
Set the width and height for the preview key to 440×320. This value controls the size of the on-screen preview. It does not have any effect on the final video.
Set the width and height for the sensor key to 1920×1080. This value controls the active region of the sensor, so basically, we want to use the entire sensor. This source will be automatically downscaled to the proper resolution at encoding time.
Increase the encoding average bitrate to 20Mbps (20000000bps), this records a much larger video file (~ 2MB for every second of video)
Increase the encoding bitrate cap to 40Mbps. Also, lower the minimum quantizer from 19 to 15 or something, just for the heck of it.
Set the H264 profile from 3_0 to 3_1 (because wikipedia says so)
Save and close this file.
To make the phone playback the recorded HD video. Simply edit CameraRollValidator.plist and MediaValidator.plist, they can be found in the same place as AVCapture.plist. (If you don’t do this, the file can only be played back on your computer)
Replace 768 with 1280
And replace
MaxLevel
30

with
MaxLevel
31
Save these two files.
Open /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/N88AP.plist with a Plist editor, and add the following under the capability node, this will enable HD recording from the camera app:
720p

hd-video-capture

If you are having a hard time figuring out where to make the changes, download the pre-edited file HDVideo3GS.zip Then simply copy the plist files to the correct location via SCP.
Reboot your iDevice.

Firefox 4 gets much, much faster

One of the major components essential for the future of Firefox just landed in the beta build of the browser, and it gives the open-source browser the page-rendering speed boost that it had been lacking.

Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, Firefox 4 beta 7 introduces JagerMonkey, Mozilla's next-generation JavaScript engine that puts the browser in the same ballpark as its high-speed competitors. The old TraceMonkey engine was slow enough to no longer be in the same league as Chrome, Opera, Safari, and the Internet Explorer 9 beta.

Mozilla's internal benchmarks show significant JavaScript rendering improvements for Firefox 4 beta 7's new JagerMonkey engine.
(Credit:
Mozilla, Inc.)

Mozilla describes the improvements as incorporating the JagerMonkey JIT compiler into the new SpiderMonkey engine, and says that users can expect to see significantly faster start-up times, page-load speed, and JavaScript-intensive Web tasks such as running apps and playing games. The company's internal benchmarking shows Firefox 4 is three times faster than the current Firefox 3.6.12 on both Kraken and Sunspider JavaScript benchmarks, and five times faster than Firefox 3.6.12 on the V8 benchmark. Engineer David Mandelin stated in a blog post that Firefox 4 will be "a little bit faster" by the time it's finished.

Although speed is definitely a major part of a successful modern browser, there's more that's changed in the latest Firefox 4 beta besides JavaScript rendering. Firefox was one of the first browsers to incorporate hardware acceleration, and Firefox 4 beta 7 can use your computer's graphics card to load pages faster if the card is supported. The new beta will work on Windows XP, something most other hardware accelerated browsers can't do, and it will work on Macs. The Mac version is powered by OpenGL, while DirectX fuels the Windows version.

Fonts received a boost in this beta, as Firefox 4 now supports the OpenType font format. This will allow designers to control kerning, ligatures, cap variants, and alternative characters. Graphics rendering for developers also got some attention, with the addition of support for 3D graphics rendering via WebGL. Running it currently requires an OpenGL-enabled graphics card, with support planned for other cards in the future.
Panorama now has a tutorial video, a dedicated search button instead of a search field, and a button to quickly jump back to where you were.

There's also a nifty about:config tweak that comes in Firefox 4 beta 7. Instead of installing the Bar Tab add-on to better manage Firefox's open session memory, advanced users can go to about:config and set browser.sessionstore.max_concurrent_tabs to 0. This will prevent Firefox from holding in memory all but your most recently-used tabs. Clicking on a tab will automatically refresh it.

The Panorama feature received some small changes, too. It now comes with a "how-to" video that must be manually removed, and there's a dedicated search button that wasn't there before. There's a new button to jump you back to the site you were looking at when you jumped into Panorama, a convenience that was sorely missing from the previous beta.

The speed improvements in this beta are instantly noticeable, but the browser remains in beta and it's not expected to be ready until January 2011. The full changelog for Firefox 4 beta 7 can be read here.

Obama makes long-awaited return to Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia – After two years of waiting, Indonesians are finally getting the chance to welcome back their adopted son. But the euphoria that swept the predominantly Muslim country after Barack Obama's election victory has been replaced by a dose of reality.

Few here now believe he will change American policies in the Middle East or improve U.S. relations with the Muslim world. And hopes that the two countries would march forward together on the world stage have been cast aside.

Still, Indonesians gathered around television sets all over the country — in their houses, coffee shops and office buildings — and watched as he touched down.

"We all stopped what we were doing," said Tito, who uses a single name and works at the front desk at the Novotel Hotel in Balikpapan, a city on Borneo island. "Staff, guests ... It's just so amazing that he grew up here, has family here, and is now the U.S. president."

While Indonesians take tremendous pride in having partially raised the American president, who spent four childhood years in the country, the plans for his long-anticipated homecoming Tuesday have been accompanied by a sadness that he is not fully theirs.

He's already canceled two planned trips and is due to stay for just 24 hours. Shortly after he touched down his spokesman said the trip may be even further shortened because of concerns about the ash of a volcano hundreds of miles (kilometers) away.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono presented a line of ministers to Obama, who greeted them in Indonesian.

Obama planned to later tour the country's largest mosque and make a speech that will give him another opportunity to convince Muslims that the U.S. is not waging a war on Islam, but on terrorism, and needs the help of moderates to fight it.

That will give him no time to visit his old neighborhood in the sprawling overcrowded capital — a jumble of houses and narrow streets that has changed little since he was here from 1967 until 1971, although it is now in the shadow of luxury shopping malls and high-rise buildings.

At a news conference after arriving, Obama joked about the changes to the capital and the intense anticipation surrounding his homecoming.

"Obviously much has been made of the fact that this marks my return to where I lived as a young boy. I will tell you though that I barely recognized it as I was driving down the streets," he said to laughter. "The only thing that was there when I first moved to Jakarta was Sarinah (a shopping mall). Now it's one of the shorter buildings on the road."

He added he was sorry the trip was so short and he hoped one day to return with his two daughters to show them the country.

This time, his tightly packed schedule does not even allow time for brief meetings with family and friends.

"I have waited so long for this visit," said Katarina Fermina Sinaga, 61, who taught the chubby, vivacious boy, then known as "Barry," in the third grade. "I still hope to meet him. I just don't want him to forget us."

When he was first expected to come in March and then again June, the country whipped itself into a frenzy of anticipation: Books and movies about his childhood were released, celebrations planned, and exhibitions mounted.

But this time, the country seems sapped after twin natural disasters — a volcano and a tsunami — over the past two weeks that killed a combined total of 600 people. There was speculation Obama would cancel again, and the country has been unwilling to get its hopes up. Even the government waited until the last minute to announce that the visit was on.

Hopeful he still might make a last-minute stop to his old elementary school, dozens of third- and fourth-graders, dressed in green-and-white uniforms, spent Tuesday morning practicing a song dedicated to him.

"We haven't been told anything," said Hasimah, the clearly disappointed headmaster. "So we don't know how to prepare."

There is sense, even here, that what Indonesians want most is a little attention.

"He's not even taking time to meet with us," said Din Syamsuddin, the leader of the country's second-largest Muslim group, Muhammadiyah, whose 30 million members had high hopes for Obama. "Even Bush did that ..."

Obama moved to Indonesia when he was 7 after his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, married her second husband, Lolo Soetoro, whom she met when they were studying at the University of Hawaii.

The neighborhood they first called home was Menteng Dalam, a Dutch-era neighborhood with red-tiled roofs in Jakarta's center, where many share fond memories of the young Barry.

They remember that his mother would walk him to school through streets muddied by monsoon rains, that he was comfortable speaking Indonesian, and that the family kept white crocodiles and a monkey in their yard.

"We really have to greet him like a homecoming brother," said Linggas Sitompul, a 65-year-old customer at a food stall serving Bakso, the same spicy meatball soup the president says he loved as a child.

Before Obama's inauguration, Indonesia viewed the United States mostly as a target for protest. Hard-liners saw the George W. Bush administration's anti-terrorism efforts as a proxy for anti-Muslim feelings.

They had hoped that Obama's connection to Indonesia would give it a special place in his administration, but two years into his term, reality has set in. Most now recognize his visit will not improve their poverty or raise their national stature.

And they know that despite feeling a kinship with the American president, in the end, he will leave and go back to the place that is really his home.

Verbatim announces new Store 'n' Go Clip-it USB drive

USB flash drives come in all kinds of shapes and sizes—tiny slivers, key-shaped, coins, even as rubber duckies. If you ever wanted a USB flash drive that can double as a paper clip, then your wish came true on Tuesday. Verbatim has announced the $20 Store ‘n’ Go Clip-it USB flash drive, which can do double duty as a paper clip.

Now, with the ongoing effort towards a paperless office, why would you need a flash drive that can act as a paper clip? There are several fields where paper use has been reduced but still necessary—law offices, real estate, accounting, just to name a few. For example, if you can present a package of printed photos, you can save the digital copies to the Store ‘n’ Go Clip-it and clip the drive to the package. It makes for a tidy presentation.

The Store ‘n’ Go Clip-it is available in 4GB capacity and in black, blue, green, orange, and pink. Verbatim says the drive will be available in December.

Nearly 4,500 stranded on cruise ship off Mexico

SAN DIEGO – Navy helicopters shuttled in supplies Tuesday to 4,500 passengers and crew members expected to remain stranded on a disabled cruise ship off the coast of Mexico at least through Wednesday night.

Mexican seagoing tugboats were expected to reach the Carnival Splendor on Tuesday afternoon to begin the slow process of towing it to the Mexican port of Ensenada. Passengers will be bused back to California from there.

The ship, which left from Long Beach on Sunday, was 200 miles south of San Diego when an engine room fire cut its power early Monday, according to a statement from Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines. It began drifting off the coast of northern Baja California.

Monty Mathisen, of the New York-based publication Cruise Industry News, called the fire a freak accident.

"This stuff does not happen, I mean once in a blue moon," he said. "The ships have to be safe, if not the market will collapse."

The last major accident on a cruise ship was when one sank in a Greek harbor in 2007 after hitting rocks. No one was hurt.

The 3,299 passengers and 1,167 crew members aboard the Splendor were not hurt either and the fire was put out in the generator's compartment, but the 952-foot Mexican Riveria-bound ship had no air conditioning, hot water or telephone service. Cell phone and Internet service were knocked out because of the loss of power, preventing families from communicating with their loved ones.

Toni Sweet, of San Pedro, Calif., was frustrated Tuesday after relentlessly calling the cell phone of her cousin on board and getting no answer.

"We know everything is fine, but we're just worried," Sweet said. "She was nervous about going on a cruise ship even before this happened and now with this, I don't think she'll ever go again."

Carnival spokeswoman Joyce Oliva said the ship's command has been able to communicate with outsiders on a backup system.

After the fire, passengers were first asked to move from their cabins to the ship's upper deck, but eventually allowed to go back to their rooms.

Bottled water and cold food were provided, and the ship's auxiliary power allowed for toilets and cold running water.

On Tuesday, U.S. sailors loaded cargo planes with boxes of crab meat, croissants and other items for the stranded passengers. They were to be ferried to an aircraft carrier at sea, where helicopters will pick them up and drop them on the ship.

The tugboats were expected to arrive back at the port with the ship around 8 p.m. PST Wednesday, Coast Guard Petty Officer Kevin Metcalf said. Metcalf said the tugs, which will be escorted by a Coast Guard cutter, must move slowly because the ship is so big.

From Ensenada, passengers will be driven 50 miles by bus to the California border, said Oliva, who added that she was unaware of any safety concerns from passengers or their families about traveling by land in Mexico.

Ensenada Port Capt. Carlos Carrillo said some bus companies that normally work with cruise ships docked in Ensenada already take passengers to the border.

"I don't think it will be much trouble to get the passengers to the border," he said.

Carnival Corp.'s stock was down about 1 percent Tuesday.

Mathisen commended the cruise line for its handling of the situation, saying officials responded quickly and were providing information.

But he said the accident deals another blow to the industry, which already has been hurting from a drop in trips to Mexico because of the country's drug violence.

It also will be costly for Carnival, which is refunding passengers, offering vouchers for future cruises and may have to dry dock the ship if the damage is extensive.

Once passengers are dropped off, the Splendor will be towed back to Long Beach, Calif., a journey that will take days. That's why the passengers will be dropped off in Mexico first.

"We know this has been an extremely trying situation for our guests and we sincerely thank them for their patience," Carnival President and CEO Gerry Cahill said in the statement. "Conditions on board the ship are very challenging and we sincerely apologize for the discomfort and inconvenience our guests are currently enduring."

Associated Press writers Elliot Spagat, Olga R. Rodriguez in Mexico City, and Carson Walker in Phoenix also contributed to this report.

(This version corrects name of publication to Cruise Industry News, spelling of Ensenada.)

Samsung ships 7 million Galaxy S phones

In a world where all must compete with iPhone, Samsung is doing quite well. On Monday, the electronics maker said that it has shipped about seven million Galaxy S smartphones worldwide, with three million coming from the U.S. alone, Reuters reports. The Android-powered device launched on all U.S. carriers in July. Samsung’s biggest problem has been keeping pace with demand. ”We’re in a situation where we wish we had more supply,” Chief Marketing Officer Paul Golden told Reuters.

The company would be fine, but has faced supply shortages for its AMOLED screens. It is working to boost production of the component. Samsung supplies other companies with screens as well. Previously, the manufacturer has stated that it will ship 20 million Galaxy S phones by the end of the year and an additional 1 million Galaxy S tablets, a tablet about half the size of the iPad and built on the same technology as the Galaxy S phones.

Still, it’s difficult to be excited about any of these numbers when the iPhone is selling 14-15 million units a quarter and it’s only on one U.S. carrier. The Galaxy S series is available on every major U.S. carrier.

Is it fair to compare the Galaxy S to the iPhone? Should we hold other companies to a lower standard?
