Orbotix has used the Google I/O event to launch the Android SDK for its Sphero remote controlled ball. It has also simultaneously released the SKD for iOS developers. Controlled by an iPhone or Android app, the 4.3-inch LED-lit sphere connects to a user’s smartphone over Bluetooth. The app interface uses either a virtual stick or accelerometer to control a Sphero.
The SDK includes sample apps and developer guides. Also included are developer forums, an idea portal, and contests. The basic free app that will be available for download will allow users to start a lap-timer for races and altering the color of the ball. However, apps that could be developed for the Spheros include sumo wrestling, office golf and even augmented reality apps.
Customers can reserve their Spheros now, but won’t be expected to make a cash outlay for around 60 days when official paid pre-orders begin. No word on the anticipated cost of each Sphero as yet.
