Apple’s WWDC June 6th 2011, iPhone 5 To be Announced In June?

Apple has officially confirmed the dates for the 2011 World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC), and WWDC 2011 will take place from the 6th of June 2011 to the 10th of June 2011 at San Francisco’s Moscone West.

Apple WWDC 2011Apple are expected to unveil a range of things at this years WWDC which include the new iPhone 5, but it looks like we will also see some exciting stuff for Apple’s iOS and also Mac OS X.

“At this year’s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss.”

We are expecting Apple to unveil the new iPhone 5 at WWDC 2011, as they have done in previous years. We also heard earlier today that we may not see iOS 5.0 be released until the fall of 2011, if this is the case we think Apple will definitely show off iOS 5.0 at this years WWDC.

Asus Transformer Android 3.1 update now available through unofficial channels

Asus Transformer Android 3.1 update now available through unofficial channels
Asus is said to be finalizing Android 3.1 for their Eee Pad Transformer that’s hard to get in retail, but there are some despo users that have found a so-called “leaked final build” of the Android 3.1 for the Transformer, and what’s more, it seemed to be working perfectly. To be fair, this isn’t a big surprise, as the Transformer is running stock Honeycomb, so there shouldn’t be much problem when running on Android 3.1.

Early reports suggest that performance and general responsiveness have been improved (with the exception of JavaScript performance, which has actually taken a bit of a hit), and the 3.1 upgrade also enables a new firmware update for the Transformer dock, which brings with it some bug fixes and a new power saving mode.

Now that’s some good news for early adopters.

MSI to showcase GTX580 Lightning XE with Twin Frozr III at Computex

MSI to showcase GTX580 Lightning XE with Twin Frozr III at Computex
MSI will have a wide variety of products at this year’s Computex show but as far as GPU are concerned MSI new N580GTX Lightning Xtreme Edition will certainly be the star of the show. MSI’s newest Lightning member will be the cream of the crop when it comes to graphics cards and will have some quite unique features including the triple temperature monitors, new fans with Smart Temp Sensor for the quite well known Twin Frozr III cooler and a decent factory overclock. MSI’s Twin Frozr II has been rather famous among enthusiasts, so how will the new generation Twin Frozr III perform?

MSI is keeping things quite simple when it comes to look of the card as this one will use the blue on black colour scheme with black PCB, black shroud and two blue fans. The precise clocks still haven’t been confirmed but it is rumoured to be clocked somewhere at around 832MHz for the GF110 GPU and 4200MHz for 3GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 384-bit memory. The extra, or to be precise the double amount of memory should help the card to give out much better perfromance numbers at high resolutions, multi-screen setups and tesselation usage.
MSI to showcase GTX580 Lightning XE with Twin Frozr III at Computex
There are also a few new features on this Twin Frozr III. The two fans will feature Dust Removal Tech making the fans spin in reverse for 30 seconds upon system startup in order to clear the dust buildup. The N580GTX Lightning Xtreme Edition will also be the first graphics card to have three temperature sensors for GPU, Memory and MOSFET, as well as an unique Smart Temperature Technology that will change the color of the fans from blue to white as the card goes over 45C. Sadly there’s no red LED for when the card goes above 80C.

12 Megapixel HTC Windows Phone 7 Smartphone Leaked

Mystery HTC SmartphoneIt looks like HTC will be launching a new Windows Phone 7 smartphone with a 12 megapixel camera built in, the photos below were posted on Twitter by Eldar Murtzain.

As you can see from the photos, the camera on this new Windows Phone 7 smartphone from HTC features a 12 megapixel resolution, unfortunately there are no other details about this mystery device.

Mystery HTC SmartphoneWe have heard previously that HTC may be working on a 16 megapixel smartphone, so as Slashgear points put this could be the rumored device with the resolution set lower than the maximum, or it could possibly be another new device.

WebOS gear with 1024x768 LCD, fixed keyboard shows online

A pair of logs from developer Thomas Perraudin have shown two previously unknown webOS devices. One, nicknamed Nova Dartfish, has the same 1024x768 resolution as the TouchPad but has a fixed, non-sliding keyboard. It could be a TouchPad with a Bluetooth keyboard, but it also shows the Touchstone dock mode enabled and doesn't have a familiar codename.
The second has no name at all and has a 320x480 screen without any hardware keyboard. HP's device was clearly a webOS testbed as it was connected to AT&T, which only just got the smaller resolution Veer 4G, and was running the so far TouchPad-only webOS 3.0. Its resolution is too low to be the already photographed touch-only phone.

HP has already promised a wide variety of webOS hardware in coming months and has pointed to webOS booting on PCs. A possibility exists that Nova Dartfish is actually a PC test mule running the platform instead of Windows. Executives at the company haven't said for certain how many more webOS phones and tablets would be ready by the end of the year, although leaks have already mentioned the higher-end touch-only phone as well as the seven-inch Opal tablet. Nintendo 3DS to receive downloadable extras from Best Buy this June 7th

Own a Nintendo 3DS and wish that you could do more with it? When we say more, we are talking about getting the most bang for your buck, so mark your calendars for this coming June 7th, as Nintendo 3DS owners will be able to get hold of downloadable extras from Best Buy from that date onwards. This collaboration would mean Nintendo 3DS owners can experience automatic wireless access at around 1,000 Best Buy stores throughout the US, although those will be select locations only.

When you enable this service, you can access bonus content including gaming extras and movie trailers courtesy of the handheld console’s integrated Wi-Fi connectivity in addition to its new SpotPass, instant share feature. Apart from that, Best Buy customers will also be in line to receive special offers via the in-store service.

A Best Buy statement reads, “We want our customers to fully tap into the potential of their Nintendo 3DS device, so we’re pleased to offer free access to special Wi-Fi and SpotPass content in-store.” Will this nugget of information nudge you to make a 3DS purchase anytime soon?

ThinkFlood RedEye app gives Android a rare universal remote

ThinkFlood gave Android owners rare access to a universal remote app through a beta version of RedEye for Android. Much like the iPhone version, it can steer either the regular Wi-Fi using RedEye or a RedEye Pro and send both raw and programmed IR commands to home theater gear, including multi device tasks like switching on a TV and starting a movie player. It works with at least Android 1.6 on phones and scales up to Android 3.0 tablets.
The beta version faces several limitations, most of which are due to Android fragmentation. App users can't try the RedEye mini since the company both needs to verify whether there are problems with certain phones' headphone jacks. Owners also need to have an Android phone that allows non-Market apps for the beta, which rules out most AT&T phones until the company pushes out more of its non-Market Android updates. Five HTC phones, including the Aria, Desire, Evo 4G, Hero, and myTouch Slide, don't support Wi-fI multicasting and need to talk to the Redeye directly by IP address.

The RedEye mini might also not work at all on Android, as Java may be too slow to keep up with the live audio processing that iOS can do in native code, ThinkFlood said.

Getting set up will for now need an iOS device, though on-Android setup is coming later. Android phones that haven't been rooted can't usually get on to ad hoc Wi-Fi like an iPhone and have to talk to the RedEye on an infrastructure Wi-Fi network that would need an iPhone or iPod's help first. Universal remote support has been uncommon on Android for these reasons but is expected to get easier with some devices through Google's Android@Home initiative.

Microsoft buys Skype for $8.5b for Xbox, Windows Phone

Microsoft on Tuesday confirmed rumors and said it would buy Skype for $8.5 billion. The mutually approved deal will see Skype's voice and video chat help out platforms like the Xbox 360 and its Kinect camera as well as Windows Phone. Outlook and Microsoft's corporate communication system Lync would also get help, Microsoft said.
The Windows developer insisted it would still "invest in and support" Skype for non-Microsoft platforms. Skype chief Tony Bates would head up a new group inside Microsoft, the Skype Division, and would talk directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Government approval for the deal is expected before the end of 2011.

Microsoft's acquisition is its largest to date and has already drawn criticism for the potential impact it could have on voice over IP. Despite its promises, Microsoft would have a financial interest in discouraging support for Android, iOS, and the Mac. It might also prefer to support the Xbox 360 over built-in Skype support in TVs from Panasonic and others.

New MacBook Air with Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt in June/July?

New MacBook Air with Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt in June/July?
Apple has thrown in Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors and Thunderbolt into their MacBook Pro lineup and iMac lineup, so what’s left is the MacBook and MacBook Air. According to DigiTimes, Apple is gearing up now and may receive shipment of the refreshed paper laptops in late May ahead of a June or July launch.

The MacBook Air right now is using 10W and 17W Core 2 Duos, so hopefully Apple will be able to squeeze in the new 17W mobile processors from Intel, which makes them head-to-head with Samsung’s new 9-Series laptops. This is so interesting!

Additionally, DigiTimes says Quanta will continue to assemble Apple’s ultra-portable laptops, with Simplo Technology and Dynapack supplying the battery packs. Fancy a superslim MacBook Air powered by Intel Core i7?

ViewSonic 7x to Be First 7-Inch Honeycomb Tablet

While everyone except HTC seems to have given up the 7-inch form factor in favor of 8.9 and 10.1-inch tablets, ViewSonic hasn’t forgotten about the mid-sized option. The company is slated to reveal the ViewSonic 7x, an upgrade (but not a replacement) to the ViewSonic 7. It should become the first 7-inch tablet to utilize Honeycomb and will sport a Tegra 2 chip, dual cameras, and HSPA+ support.

The 7-inch size last saw some relative success with the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and is the footprint that HTC chose for their Flyer tablet. The Flyer, though new, does not come out of the box with Honeycomb (though an update is promised for the future).

More details on the ViewSonic 7x should become available towards the end of the month at Computex, where it will be unveiled. Until then, no word on pricing, though rumors suggest a June launch.

Sharp Aquos SH-12C hits high-end Android with 3D, qHD screen

Sharp pushed to keep Android on top in Japan by launching a new flagship with multiple firsts for the country. The Aquos SH-12C carries two rear eight-megapixel cameras that, like the Evo 3D, can shoot 3D video or still photos. Its 4.2-inch display is both one of the sharpest in Japan at 540x960 but also provides glasses-free 3D to show off the resulting footage.

The inside isn't quite as powerful as in the HTC phone or the LG Optimus 3D but is still at the high end with a 1.4GHz, single-core Snapdragon MSM8255 and 512MB of RAM. Sharp is delivering the SH-12C with Android 2.3 out of the box and has added its own extras through both its TapFlow UI and Japan-friendly extras like a 1Seg over-the-air TV tuner.

NTT DoCoMo is so far the initial carrier for the new Aquos and will start taking pre-orders on May 14 with a May 20 ship date. Sharp hasn't detailed expansion plans, but it did promise a 3D smartphone for the US and may see the SH-12C as its opportunity. [via Impress]

Snail Braille Reader Concept

Reading Braille is not easy, especially when your sight is still perfec – meaning your sense of touch isn’t attuned to that of a visually impaired person’s level. Well, for some of us who are attempting to read Braille as we adapt to our new situation, there is the Snail Braille reader concept that might actually be realized if someone is willing to pour the money, time and technology to creating it.

Just what does the Snail Braille reader do? It will function as smooth as silk even on the predictably bumpy surface, where it is capable of recording the text it reads for future playback. Heck, you can even choose to synchronize it with a Bluetooth headset so that the visually impaired can go through the entire book with their ears without having to disturb those around them – useful in a library, now? With the addition of kinetic recharging (now just effective is that going to be?) and pressure sensitive reading, this is one concept that is ideal for the visually impaired bookworm.

Samsung Galaxy S II hits 3 million pre-orders

Samsung claimed unprecedented genuine demand for the Galaxy S II on Sunday night. The electronics giant said it had picked up three million pre-orders worldwide for its dual-core Android phone by the end of April, when it went on sale in Korea. Orders were expected to only go up as the phone reached global scale and peaked at 120 countries.

The number suggested pent-up demand beyond just Samsung's home country, where it sold 120,000 of the phones in the first few days. It may force the company to up its forecast for the phone since it had predicted 10 million Galaxy S IIs shipping for the entire year.

Demand is likely to taper off, but at this rate could see Samsung's rapid growth in smartphones continue and threaten companies like Apple. The Galaxy S II has earned much of its early buzz from being the fastest phone to date as well as its 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display.

Its performance could change with the launch of the HTC Sensation by the summer as well as the next iPhone in September.

Blackberry Playbook to Get Keyboard Dock Soon

It’s rather interesting to me that to separate the PlayBook from the other tablets on the market RIM tried to position it as a content creation device, not just one for consumption of content. With the focus on making content, the PlayBook had no official keyboard. That keyboard oversight is about to change with a new accessory on the way.

RIM’s Bruce Winter, the head of accessories there, has noted that the leaked keyboard spied online few times is real and is coming. The leaked version was apparently older shots and the real deal will have a track pad for navigation.

The keyboard will apparently dock with the PlayBook and the user will be able to fold them up together and go. It appears to have a standard QWERTY layout and smallish keys, but it will work better than the on screen keyboard for sure. No word on pricing or availability at this time.
