Skytex Primer Pocket now available for $89 (4.3 inch Android device)

Skytex Primer Pocket

The Skytex Primer Pocket is a handheld device with a 4.3 inch display and Google Android 2.2 operating system. But what makes it special is the low price. You can pick one up today for $89 from Abe’s of Maine.

That’s actually $10 lower than the price Skytex had promised when unveiling the little device earlier this month.

For the most part, it looks like you get what you pay for. The Primer Pocket has a slow processor, a low resolution display, and a resistive touch panel. But if you’re looking for a pocketable Android device that’s not a phone and doesn’t come with a voice or data plan, it doesn’t get much cheaper than this.

The Primer Pocket features a 600 MHz MIPS Xburst processor with a 400MHz DSP for video playback. It has a 480 x 272 pixel display, 4GB of storage, and 256MB of RAM. The device has a headphone jack, microSD card slot, and a built-in mic and speaker. It supports pinch-to-zoom and comes with the GetJar app store preloaded instead of the Android Market. You can also install other third party app stores if you’re looking for a wider selection of apps.

Apple plan invest $1 billion in Sharp LCD plant: sources

According to a sales note by MF Global FXA Securities released on Wednesday, Sharp may get an infusion of about a billion US dollars from Apple for its LCD manufacturing plant in Kameyama.

Apple routinely uses its massive cash reserves to shore up supplies of critical components from manufacturers in China, and is considering the investment in order to secure a stable supply of LCD panels for its iPads and iPhones. According to local media reports, Sharp is expecting an investment of 300 million yen ($1.3 billion) from the Cupertino company. That’s a lot of iPad screens.

Reports last week indicated that Apple was considering switching from LG to Samsung for the supply of iPad 2 screens owing to quality issues; perhaps Sharp has trumped Samsung in contention for Apple’s business. Or maybe Apple is looking at Sharp to supply the panels for the upcoming iPhone 5, or even the next iPad, whenever that arrives.

Microsoft confirms Windows 8 will have an App Store!

This is one of those posts in which the title nearly says it all: Microsoft has confirmed the existence of a coming application store (ala Apple’s App Store) for Windows 8.

The truth came out in an entry that Microsoft posted on its new blog that focuses on Windows 8. While it has been generally known in the market for some time that such an app store was being built, today’s revelation is the first completely ironclad mention of the product’s existence.

In a list of the teams that are working on the coming operating system, Microsoft listed “App Store” as one of the groups. The post promises that each group will eventually make itself better known through the blog. To be even more sure, we have put in a request to Microsoft Windows team to ensure that we are not, and we don’t even think that this is possible, misreading the situation.

Earlier this year at the AllThingsD event, Steven Sinofsky noted off the cuff that Windows 8 will have an app store, but today’s news is the first hard, official, unquestionable confirmation.

TNW Microsoft would like to apologize for being late to this story. We read the blog post that contained the fact hours ago, but missed the crucial line. The very intelligent NeoWin brought it to our attention.

We have, of course, known about the coming app store in Windows 8 since April, but Microsoft took its time confirming it for reasons that it has yet to share. Also, as we have previously reported, Windows 8 apps will be built with HTML5 and Java. As a final addendum, it would be remiss to not note in this piece that the coming BUILD conference is where we expect to see such things as the app store fully unveiled. TNW Microsoft will be covering the event live, of course.

Apple to Start Selling iPhone 5 in Stores on 7th October (Friday)!

iPhone 5-Possible Looks-Metal Backing

Apple is reportedly planning to start selling its next generation iPhone 5 in stores on 7th October (Friday). It has been just reported by our friends at 9 to 5 Mac. The site notes that Apple was a little bit confused for iPhone 5 launching date, considering either 7th October or 14th October, but the latest  fine conditions of iPhone 5 massive production has convinced Apple to launch it on an earlier date i.e. 7th October.

We’ve independently heard that Apple has plans to begin selling the next-generation iPhone on Friday, October 7th; the date first reported by TiPB. According to our sources, Apple has been weighing between launching the new iPhone on October 7th or October 14th, but with the product’s latest stages of pre-mass-production currently moving along nicely, Apple is presentlyshooting towards a launch on the 7th. On top of this, unlike with the iPad 2, Apple plans to offer pre-orders for the new iPhone.
Pre-orders of iPhone 5 are said to begin at the end of September. Apple is reportedly weighing Thursday, September 29th or Friday, September 30th, though the later one seems more optimum.
It means Apple September Event would be the best time for the announcement of iPhone 5.

Google buying Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion

Well, that's what we call a good start of the week – Google and Motorola Mobility have announced a $12.5 billion deal under which the search giant will acquire the phone maker. This translates into a per share price of $40, meaning that Google is ready to pay 63% over Motorola Mobility's share price as per the company's Friday's closing price. This puts the search company on the same foot as Apple and other Android handset makers as Google will turn into more than just a platform maker.

The deal is expected to close by the end of 2011/beginning of 2012. But it's not just Motorola's handset expertise that this deal brings - it's a transaction which is equally about patents. Just a couple of days ago Motorola said it wants a piece of that patent pie and that might have been one of the reasons for the acquisition. Motorola Mobility reportedly owns more than 17,000 patents and is among Google's best options for defending its mobile OS. Google's Larry Page himself points out:

"Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies." Page was also excited about the possibilities this brings for Android, "supercharging" the platform.

Andy Rubin heading Google's mobile efforts reaffirmed the company's commitment to Android as an open source platform as well as to the open source community. The deal would only elevate the platform, while Google itself will continue to work with its Android partners and continue distributing devices running the OS.

What were the reverberations among Motorola Mobility's fellow Android phone makers? The chief executives of HTC, LG and Sony Ericsson all welcomed the news as the move both defends and strengthens Google's case for the platform. But this opens a ton of questions starting with the future of Motorola's Blur skinning and ending with how this affects rival platforms and most notably Microsoft's Windows Phone. Not all answers will come right away, but Motorola Mobility's conference call is live now and will definitely add more clarity to the picture - we'll update you soon, so stay tuned.

Mac OS X Lion supports HD calls with Skype 5.3

Skype has just announced that it has today released Skype 5.3, bringing support for OS X Lion and HD video calling. The update is available now by opening Skype for Mac and choosing Check for Updates. It is also now available for direct download on Skype’s site. The addition of high-res HD calling is a welcome one and official support for Lion should fix some bugs that people have been experiencing.

Skype reccomends a minimum upload speed of 1.5mB/s to use the HD video calling feature. You will, of course, also have to have a third-party HD capable webcam or a those built into the newest Macs.
We tested out the service and found the video quality to be very good initially, but had difficulty retaining the HD stream, even on solid wired connections. Skype’s automatic quality adjustment kicked in fairly soon after the call began. You can see that the quality is decent, if not great, in the first shot below, but then degraded significantly over the next few minutes
.

The upgrade to support Lion is a welcome one, although the much-maligned Mac interface has not recieved any significant changes in 5.3. The HD video calling is also a great upgrade, although the jury is still out on how well Skype is able to maintain an HD stream, even over a solid connection.
If you try out Skype 5.3 for Mac’s HD feature, let us know how it works for you in the comments below.

Apple is Now the Worlds Most Valuable Company!

AAPL vs XOM
Apple’s market capitalization reached $341.5 billion today in trading, becoming the worlds largest and most valuable company. Apples new position in the top spot just barely edges out oil giant Exxon Mobil’s $341.4 billion, and is more of a function of the skittish behavior on Wall Street than any particular news today since both stocks are down quite a ways from their 52-week highs. Nonetheless, this is quite an amazing feat for a company that was just $7.68 a share a decade ago and on the verge of bankruptcy.

If you really want shareholder envy, check out what your net worth would be if you had invested in Apple stock rather than buying Apple equipment.

Just look at Apple’s 10 year chart when compared to cash-cow Exxon:

Archos G9 Android tablet to ship with hybrid 250GB HDD

Due to the cost and space considerations, it’s unusual to see a tablet with more than 128GB of on-board storage. 16 or 32GB are more common, with anything above that being a premium option at a premium price. You can also argue that a tablet really doesn’t need storage beyond those levels.

Archos disagrees though, and will be offering its G9 Android tablet with the option of a 250GB hybrid hard drive. It’s a hybrid because Archos wanted more than the performance of a standard hard drive, so they added a 4GB flash memory chip to speeds things up a little. This is a technique some hard drive manufacturers have experimented with in their standard drives, with Seagate even going so far as to say 80% of hard drives will by hybrids by 2015.

As you’d expect, the inclusion of a hard drive makes the tablet a little heaveir (599g or 755g) and thicker (14.7mm or 15.6mm), but the use of a Seagate Momentus 7mm 2.5″ drive means it still remains a very portable unit.

The 250GB option will be available on both the 8-inch and 10-inch models of the G9, which cost $369.99 and $469.99 respectively. If you consider that getting 64GB of storage in an iPad 2 costs $699, the G9 could be considered a bit of a bargain. Alternatively you can opt for a 16GB flash-only G9 model if you really don’t want or need the additional storage.

As for other features of note, you get Android 3.2 running on an ARM Cortex A9 OMAP4 1.5GHz, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a camera capable of recording 720p.

The question is, does any want 250GB of storage in a tablet? It would certainly come in handy for a long holiday where watching movies is your best form of entertainment and there’s no internet connection for streaming. As a media center it sounds ideal.

iPhone 5 Launch October Not September?

We have been hearing a number of rumors over the last few weeks that the iPhone 5 would launch in September, first we heard it would launch on September the 5th, and then we heard that it would launch in the first two weeks of September.

Now according to the guys over at All Things D, we will see the iPhone 5 launch at the start of October, this follows on from a recent Gizmodo report which said it would land at the end of September after they received some information from an AT&T employee.

iPhone 5 Concept Design

So it could be the start of October rather than September, but who knows with Apple, one thing I suspect that will happen is that Apple will announce the iPhone 5 in September at the same time as iOS 5 and the new iPod Touch, but it could go on sale anytime after that announcement and the beginning of October.
The above image is an iPhone 5 concept design.
