Sony's New eReader is the Lightest in the World

It's a toss up between Amazon's Kindle and Barnes & Noble's Nook as to which one wins the popularity contest in the eBook reader market, but according to Sony, its new Reader Wi-Fi (model PRS-T1) trumps them both when it comes to being lightweight.

Sony's Reader Wi-Fi weighs just 168 grams, or less than 6 ounces. That makes it the lightest 6-inch eReader the world has ever seen.

"Slipping effortlessly into a bag or pocket, Reader Wi-Fi is no bigger than a paperback book," Sony said in a statement. "8.9mm thin and weighing just 168 grams it’s supremely comfortable to hold, with a gently curving profile that fits naturally in your hand."

The Reader Wi-Fi also features an enhanced touchscreen, access to the Reader Store, it's the first eReader to allow book lovers to borrow eBooks wirelessly from public libraries via na on-screen Public Library icon, 2GB of storage capacity (enough to hold around 1,200 books, according to Sony), microSD card slot, and one month battery life (3 weeks with wireless on).

Look for the Reader Wi-Fi to ship in October for $149.
Maximum Tech's take: Under 6 ounces is a pretty remarkable achievement. The third generation Kindle, which itself is comfortable to hold, weighs between 8.5 (3G) and 8.7 ounces (Wi-Fi), while the Nook Touch Reader checks in at 7.48 ounces.

Lenovo puts out 7-inch Android tablet, names it IdeaPad A1

Lenovo_ideapad_a1

Remember in July when we found a mysterious, 7-inch Lenovo tablet? Well, now it's September, and it's not so mysterious anymore. It's called the IdeaPad A1, and on top of the brilliance that is a 7-inch Android tablet, it's also only $249.

It's not as advanced as Lenovo's other offerings, but it sure does give you plenty of bang for your buck. In fact, at only $249, it still manages to pack some killer specs, like a 1GHz Cortex-A8 processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, dedicated GPS, and a screen resolution of 1024 x 600. Naturally, it has front- and rear-facing cameras with 16GB of storage to store those pictures on. In terms of connectivity, it's pretty loaded: WiFi and Bluetooth, of course, and also that dedicated GPS, which means you won't need to have an internet connection to navigate yourself around town.

The IdeaPad A1 only half an inch thick, and weighs less than a pound. You can also get its magnesium alloy casing in black, white, pink, or blue. So at $249, I'd say this is one heck of a deal. You can pick one up stateside in September.

Samsung announces Galaxy Note, 5.3-inch phone/tablet hybrid

Galaxy-note-samsung

This week has been quite busy one for smartphone giant Samsung. Earlier, they released the much-anticipated Galaxy S II smartphone for the US. However, no one was expecting to see what they released this morning: a huge smartphone (or tiny tablet) called the Galaxy Note.

The device's main selling point (and source of confusion) is the massive 5.3-inch HD display. It should certainly be an awesome display, with Samsung's Super AMOLED technology and a 1280 x 800 resolution.

However, this great display also makes the phone huge, so much so that many will consider it too big to be a smartphone. The Dell Streak also tried to make the 5-inch display work, and while it found a home with niche users, it has never gone mainstream.

Samsung calls the Galaxy Note a "Smart Mobile Device," but the company still claims it maintains "smartphone portability." As you can see in the above image, a phone application appears to be included, which implies that this device is supposed to be as mobile as a phone. Still, it remains to be seen if the device's size is practical in normal use.

The remainder of the specification list is also impressive, including a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 8MP back and 2MP front cameras, WiFi, Bluetooth, and both HSPA+ and LTE 4G (although the announcement was not specific about whether there would be different versions of the device for different carriers). Samsung chose Android 2.3 Gingerbread to power the device, and as usual included their custom TouchWiz interface.

One of the most interesting inclusions is something Samsung calls the S Pen, a pressure sensitive pen that can be used with the Galaxy Note. A similar concept was previously used with the HTC Flyer, which many have found quite handy. Fortunately, Samsung made the good decision to include a slot for the stylus in the device, as it will be much more accesible and less likely to be lost that way.

Even though I don't know what I would use it for, I want to own one of these devices. I really like the huge, high-resolution display and the S Pen, not to mention the rest of the specs are very high end. However, the market may frown upon a device that is just a little too big to be a phone. What do you think about the concept?

Intel resuscitates MeeGo, claims they are committed to the platform

Meego-phone-intel

When Nokia announced that they would be using Windows Phone 7 as their primary smartphone operating system, many wondered about the fate of their other OS, MeeGo, which they were developing in a partnership with Intel. Based on the silence of Intel and the content of Nokia's announcement, many figured the open-source OS project was dead.

Apparently, Intel has now decided that they won't let MeeGo go down without a fight. The company stated today that they "remain committed to MeeGo and open source, and will continue to work with the community to help develop and meet the needs of customers and end users." This doesn't sound like they will be putting too much effort into it, but anything is better than them letting MeeGo die.

Before the Nokia/Windows Phone 7 deal, MeeGo was shaping up to be a very good OS. Combined with Nokia's hardware, many thought it had the potential to threaten Android and iOS. As such, many people (including me) were saddened when Nokia announced they would no longer be working on MeeGo. Even if it doesn't work out, I am glad to see that Intel is at least giving MeeGo a little bit of a chance.

Skytex Primer Pocket now available for $89 (4.3 inch Android device)

Skytex Primer Pocket

The Skytex Primer Pocket is a handheld device with a 4.3 inch display and Google Android 2.2 operating system. But what makes it special is the low price. You can pick one up today for $89 from Abe’s of Maine.

That’s actually $10 lower than the price Skytex had promised when unveiling the little device earlier this month.

For the most part, it looks like you get what you pay for. The Primer Pocket has a slow processor, a low resolution display, and a resistive touch panel. But if you’re looking for a pocketable Android device that’s not a phone and doesn’t come with a voice or data plan, it doesn’t get much cheaper than this.

The Primer Pocket features a 600 MHz MIPS Xburst processor with a 400MHz DSP for video playback. It has a 480 x 272 pixel display, 4GB of storage, and 256MB of RAM. The device has a headphone jack, microSD card slot, and a built-in mic and speaker. It supports pinch-to-zoom and comes with the GetJar app store preloaded instead of the Android Market. You can also install other third party app stores if you’re looking for a wider selection of apps.

Apple plan invest $1 billion in Sharp LCD plant: sources

According to a sales note by MF Global FXA Securities released on Wednesday, Sharp may get an infusion of about a billion US dollars from Apple for its LCD manufacturing plant in Kameyama.

Apple routinely uses its massive cash reserves to shore up supplies of critical components from manufacturers in China, and is considering the investment in order to secure a stable supply of LCD panels for its iPads and iPhones. According to local media reports, Sharp is expecting an investment of 300 million yen ($1.3 billion) from the Cupertino company. That’s a lot of iPad screens.

Reports last week indicated that Apple was considering switching from LG to Samsung for the supply of iPad 2 screens owing to quality issues; perhaps Sharp has trumped Samsung in contention for Apple’s business. Or maybe Apple is looking at Sharp to supply the panels for the upcoming iPhone 5, or even the next iPad, whenever that arrives.

Microsoft confirms Windows 8 will have an App Store!

This is one of those posts in which the title nearly says it all: Microsoft has confirmed the existence of a coming application store (ala Apple’s App Store) for Windows 8.

The truth came out in an entry that Microsoft posted on its new blog that focuses on Windows 8. While it has been generally known in the market for some time that such an app store was being built, today’s revelation is the first completely ironclad mention of the product’s existence.

In a list of the teams that are working on the coming operating system, Microsoft listed “App Store” as one of the groups. The post promises that each group will eventually make itself better known through the blog. To be even more sure, we have put in a request to Microsoft Windows team to ensure that we are not, and we don’t even think that this is possible, misreading the situation.

Earlier this year at the AllThingsD event, Steven Sinofsky noted off the cuff that Windows 8 will have an app store, but today’s news is the first hard, official, unquestionable confirmation.

TNW Microsoft would like to apologize for being late to this story. We read the blog post that contained the fact hours ago, but missed the crucial line. The very intelligent NeoWin brought it to our attention.

We have, of course, known about the coming app store in Windows 8 since April, but Microsoft took its time confirming it for reasons that it has yet to share. Also, as we have previously reported, Windows 8 apps will be built with HTML5 and Java. As a final addendum, it would be remiss to not note in this piece that the coming BUILD conference is where we expect to see such things as the app store fully unveiled. TNW Microsoft will be covering the event live, of course.

Apple to Start Selling iPhone 5 in Stores on 7th October (Friday)!

iPhone 5-Possible Looks-Metal Backing

Apple is reportedly planning to start selling its next generation iPhone 5 in stores on 7th October (Friday). It has been just reported by our friends at 9 to 5 Mac. The site notes that Apple was a little bit confused for iPhone 5 launching date, considering either 7th October or 14th October, but the latest  fine conditions of iPhone 5 massive production has convinced Apple to launch it on an earlier date i.e. 7th October.

We’ve independently heard that Apple has plans to begin selling the next-generation iPhone on Friday, October 7th; the date first reported by TiPB. According to our sources, Apple has been weighing between launching the new iPhone on October 7th or October 14th, but with the product’s latest stages of pre-mass-production currently moving along nicely, Apple is presentlyshooting towards a launch on the 7th. On top of this, unlike with the iPad 2, Apple plans to offer pre-orders for the new iPhone.
Pre-orders of iPhone 5 are said to begin at the end of September. Apple is reportedly weighing Thursday, September 29th or Friday, September 30th, though the later one seems more optimum.
It means Apple September Event would be the best time for the announcement of iPhone 5.

Google buying Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion

Well, that's what we call a good start of the week – Google and Motorola Mobility have announced a $12.5 billion deal under which the search giant will acquire the phone maker. This translates into a per share price of $40, meaning that Google is ready to pay 63% over Motorola Mobility's share price as per the company's Friday's closing price. This puts the search company on the same foot as Apple and other Android handset makers as Google will turn into more than just a platform maker.

The deal is expected to close by the end of 2011/beginning of 2012. But it's not just Motorola's handset expertise that this deal brings - it's a transaction which is equally about patents. Just a couple of days ago Motorola said it wants a piece of that patent pie and that might have been one of the reasons for the acquisition. Motorola Mobility reportedly owns more than 17,000 patents and is among Google's best options for defending its mobile OS. Google's Larry Page himself points out:

"Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies." Page was also excited about the possibilities this brings for Android, "supercharging" the platform.

Andy Rubin heading Google's mobile efforts reaffirmed the company's commitment to Android as an open source platform as well as to the open source community. The deal would only elevate the platform, while Google itself will continue to work with its Android partners and continue distributing devices running the OS.

What were the reverberations among Motorola Mobility's fellow Android phone makers? The chief executives of HTC, LG and Sony Ericsson all welcomed the news as the move both defends and strengthens Google's case for the platform. But this opens a ton of questions starting with the future of Motorola's Blur skinning and ending with how this affects rival platforms and most notably Microsoft's Windows Phone. Not all answers will come right away, but Motorola Mobility's conference call is live now and will definitely add more clarity to the picture - we'll update you soon, so stay tuned.

Mac OS X Lion supports HD calls with Skype 5.3

Skype has just announced that it has today released Skype 5.3, bringing support for OS X Lion and HD video calling. The update is available now by opening Skype for Mac and choosing Check for Updates. It is also now available for direct download on Skype’s site. The addition of high-res HD calling is a welcome one and official support for Lion should fix some bugs that people have been experiencing.

Skype reccomends a minimum upload speed of 1.5mB/s to use the HD video calling feature. You will, of course, also have to have a third-party HD capable webcam or a those built into the newest Macs.
We tested out the service and found the video quality to be very good initially, but had difficulty retaining the HD stream, even on solid wired connections. Skype’s automatic quality adjustment kicked in fairly soon after the call began. You can see that the quality is decent, if not great, in the first shot below, but then degraded significantly over the next few minutes
.

The upgrade to support Lion is a welcome one, although the much-maligned Mac interface has not recieved any significant changes in 5.3. The HD video calling is also a great upgrade, although the jury is still out on how well Skype is able to maintain an HD stream, even over a solid connection.
If you try out Skype 5.3 for Mac’s HD feature, let us know how it works for you in the comments below.

Apple is Now the Worlds Most Valuable Company!

AAPL vs XOM
Apple’s market capitalization reached $341.5 billion today in trading, becoming the worlds largest and most valuable company. Apples new position in the top spot just barely edges out oil giant Exxon Mobil’s $341.4 billion, and is more of a function of the skittish behavior on Wall Street than any particular news today since both stocks are down quite a ways from their 52-week highs. Nonetheless, this is quite an amazing feat for a company that was just $7.68 a share a decade ago and on the verge of bankruptcy.

If you really want shareholder envy, check out what your net worth would be if you had invested in Apple stock rather than buying Apple equipment.

Just look at Apple’s 10 year chart when compared to cash-cow Exxon:

Archos G9 Android tablet to ship with hybrid 250GB HDD

Due to the cost and space considerations, it’s unusual to see a tablet with more than 128GB of on-board storage. 16 or 32GB are more common, with anything above that being a premium option at a premium price. You can also argue that a tablet really doesn’t need storage beyond those levels.

Archos disagrees though, and will be offering its G9 Android tablet with the option of a 250GB hybrid hard drive. It’s a hybrid because Archos wanted more than the performance of a standard hard drive, so they added a 4GB flash memory chip to speeds things up a little. This is a technique some hard drive manufacturers have experimented with in their standard drives, with Seagate even going so far as to say 80% of hard drives will by hybrids by 2015.

As you’d expect, the inclusion of a hard drive makes the tablet a little heaveir (599g or 755g) and thicker (14.7mm or 15.6mm), but the use of a Seagate Momentus 7mm 2.5″ drive means it still remains a very portable unit.

The 250GB option will be available on both the 8-inch and 10-inch models of the G9, which cost $369.99 and $469.99 respectively. If you consider that getting 64GB of storage in an iPad 2 costs $699, the G9 could be considered a bit of a bargain. Alternatively you can opt for a 16GB flash-only G9 model if you really don’t want or need the additional storage.

As for other features of note, you get Android 3.2 running on an ARM Cortex A9 OMAP4 1.5GHz, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a camera capable of recording 720p.

The question is, does any want 250GB of storage in a tablet? It would certainly come in handy for a long holiday where watching movies is your best form of entertainment and there’s no internet connection for streaming. As a media center it sounds ideal.

In this research only broadband users were included. Gomez released figures regarding to it. It took one month to complete the project. 1.86 billion individuals were measured over 200 websites. And the results were in favor of Google Chrome.

Google Chrome won it. The average load time measured for Google Chrome was 3.433 seconds. Second in the rankings is Mozilla Firefox followed by Apple’s Safari. On number fourth is Internet Explorer.

iPhone 5 Launch October Not September?

We have been hearing a number of rumors over the last few weeks that the iPhone 5 would launch in September, first we heard it would launch on September the 5th, and then we heard that it would launch in the first two weeks of September.

Now according to the guys over at All Things D, we will see the iPhone 5 launch at the start of October, this follows on from a recent Gizmodo report which said it would land at the end of September after they received some information from an AT&T employee.

iPhone 5 Concept Design

So it could be the start of October rather than September, but who knows with Apple, one thing I suspect that will happen is that Apple will announce the iPhone 5 in September at the same time as iOS 5 and the new iPod Touch, but it could go on sale anytime after that announcement and the beginning of October.
The above image is an iPhone 5 concept design.

Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 Review

Manufacturer: Gigabyte
UK price (as reviewed): £108.82 (inc VAT)
US price (as reviewed): $129.99 (ex tax)
Preferred Partner Price: £108.82 (inc VAT)

This led us to conclude that until we saw cheaper Z68 boards, the majority of people would be better served by sticking with a cheaper, more sensibly specified P67-based motherboard. It seems that Gigabyte has made a similar observation too, as the £111 GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 is a Z68 motherboard with a P67 price.

This sounds great on paper, but we feared that in practice such a price cut would lead to unwelcome cutbacks, given the extra costs involved with implementing the Z68 chipset. Just where had Gigabyte trimmed the fat to get a Z68 board down to such an affordable level, and would these cuts affect performance?

The most obvious area in which Gigabyte has cut costs is in the size of the PCB itself; the D3H is 2cm slimmer than a standard ATX motherboard, so its PCB uses fewer raw materials.

The results of the cost-cutting axe can also be seen in the board’s VRM circuitry, which is decidedly more basic than the circuitry you see on similarly priced P67 boards. Even the heatsink cooling the MOSFETs has been scaled down to a tiny size to save costs.

The rear I/O pane; also looks decidedly skinny compared with competing boards; it has only four USB 2 ports and three audio jacks. You can configure the latter to act as 5.1 multi-channel outputs, and also enable 7.1-channel audio if you hook up your case's front audio jacks to the motherboard. However, while you can get surround sound from the motherboard, it's not nearly as easy a job as it is with a full rack of audio jacks on the back.

At least Gigabyte has made the sensible decision to keep the useful pair of rear-mounted USB 3 ports, meaning that the D3H won’t date too quickly.

Thankfully, the D3H isn’t completely bereft of premium features. The pair of SATA 6Gbps and four SATA 3Gbps ports are all aligned parallel with the board for easy cable routeing, and the board also sports three 16x PCI-E slots. However, as with most boards based on Intel 6-series chipsets, this doesn’t mean that you can use three graphics cards in CrossFireX or SLI; the board only supports dual-card configurations with each card receiving eight lanes of PCI-E bandwidth.

*Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 Review Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 Review

Complementing the 16x slots are a pair of 1x PCI-E connections and two PCI slots. These are well positioned, meaning that even if you use two GPUs, you’ll still have access to one of each of the secondary connections. Less well positioned, however, are the RAM slots, which are situated very close to the CPU socket as a result of the slimmed-down PCB.

Asus Develops Thin UX21 Laptop!

Asus UX21
Asus has come up with a new thin as air laptop in the form of the UX21! It’s not a joke; this laptop is just 17mm at its thickest point and weighs just 2.2 lbs. It’s so lightweight that you literally won’t feel any weight when you carry it with you.

And aside from being practically weightless, the Asus UX21 has an aluminum metal construction with what Asus calls a “spun” finish that looks so beautiful and flawless. Even a glance will show how smooth to the touch it is. No doubt it’s quite durable as well.

The hands-on video by Engadget shows that on the left side of the laptop are a headphone jack, a USB port, and a display port output. Also on the right side is the power outlet, another USB port and HDMI output. The back portion doesn’t show a removable battery just the hinge.

Within the laptop are a metal keyboard and a glass trackpad. You will see that the beauty of this laptop is not merely on the outside but inside as well.

Asus states in their product page that the UX21 is packed with Intel’s 2nd generation Core mobile processors up to the i7. Other features include SATA 6GB SSD and Instant-On feature. Thin as it is, the UX21 doesn’t have an optical drive.

Apple’s WWDC June 6th 2011, iPhone 5 To be Announced In June?

Apple has officially confirmed the dates for the 2011 World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC), and WWDC 2011 will take place from the 6th of June 2011 to the 10th of June 2011 at San Francisco’s Moscone West.

Apple WWDC 2011Apple are expected to unveil a range of things at this years WWDC which include the new iPhone 5, but it looks like we will also see some exciting stuff for Apple’s iOS and also Mac OS X.

“At this year’s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss.”

We are expecting Apple to unveil the new iPhone 5 at WWDC 2011, as they have done in previous years. We also heard earlier today that we may not see iOS 5.0 be released until the fall of 2011, if this is the case we think Apple will definitely show off iOS 5.0 at this years WWDC.

Asus Transformer Android 3.1 update now available through unofficial channels

Asus Transformer Android 3.1 update now available through unofficial channels
Asus is said to be finalizing Android 3.1 for their Eee Pad Transformer that’s hard to get in retail, but there are some despo users that have found a so-called “leaked final build” of the Android 3.1 for the Transformer, and what’s more, it seemed to be working perfectly. To be fair, this isn’t a big surprise, as the Transformer is running stock Honeycomb, so there shouldn’t be much problem when running on Android 3.1.

Early reports suggest that performance and general responsiveness have been improved (with the exception of JavaScript performance, which has actually taken a bit of a hit), and the 3.1 upgrade also enables a new firmware update for the Transformer dock, which brings with it some bug fixes and a new power saving mode.

Now that’s some good news for early adopters.

MSI to showcase GTX580 Lightning XE with Twin Frozr III at Computex

MSI to showcase GTX580 Lightning XE with Twin Frozr III at Computex
MSI will have a wide variety of products at this year’s Computex show but as far as GPU are concerned MSI new N580GTX Lightning Xtreme Edition will certainly be the star of the show. MSI’s newest Lightning member will be the cream of the crop when it comes to graphics cards and will have some quite unique features including the triple temperature monitors, new fans with Smart Temp Sensor for the quite well known Twin Frozr III cooler and a decent factory overclock. MSI’s Twin Frozr II has been rather famous among enthusiasts, so how will the new generation Twin Frozr III perform?

MSI is keeping things quite simple when it comes to look of the card as this one will use the blue on black colour scheme with black PCB, black shroud and two blue fans. The precise clocks still haven’t been confirmed but it is rumoured to be clocked somewhere at around 832MHz for the GF110 GPU and 4200MHz for 3GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 384-bit memory. The extra, or to be precise the double amount of memory should help the card to give out much better perfromance numbers at high resolutions, multi-screen setups and tesselation usage.

There are also a few new features on this Twin Frozr III. The two fans will feature Dust Removal Tech making the fans spin in reverse for 30 seconds upon system startup in order to clear the dust buildup. The N580GTX Lightning Xtreme Edition will also be the first graphics card to have three temperature sensors for GPU, Memory and MOSFET, as well as an unique Smart Temperature Technology that will change the color of the fans from blue to white as the card goes over 45C. Sadly there’s no red LED for when the card goes above 80C.

WebOS gear with 1024x768 LCD, fixed keyboard shows online

A pair of logs from developer Thomas Perraudin have shown two previously unknown webOS devices. One, nicknamed Nova Dartfish, has the same 1024x768 resolution as the TouchPad but has a fixed, non-sliding keyboard. It could be a TouchPad with a Bluetooth keyboard, but it also shows the Touchstone dock mode enabled and doesn't have a familiar codename.
The second has no name at all and has a 320x480 screen without any hardware keyboard. HP's device was clearly a webOS testbed as it was connected to AT&T, which only just got the smaller resolution Veer 4G, and was running the so far TouchPad-only webOS 3.0. Its resolution is too low to be the already photographed touch-only phone.

HP has already promised a wide variety of webOS hardware in coming months and has pointed to webOS booting on PCs. A possibility exists that Nova Dartfish is actually a PC test mule running the platform instead of Windows. Executives at the company haven't said for certain how many more webOS phones and tablets would be ready by the end of the year, although leaks have already mentioned the higher-end touch-only phone as well as the seven-inch Opal tablet. Nintendo 3DS to receive downloadable extras from Best Buy this June 7th

Own a Nintendo 3DS and wish that you could do more with it? When we say more, we are talking about getting the most bang for your buck, so mark your calendars for this coming June 7th, as Nintendo 3DS owners will be able to get hold of downloadable extras from Best Buy from that date onwards. This collaboration would mean Nintendo 3DS owners can experience automatic wireless access at around 1,000 Best Buy stores throughout the US, although those will be select locations only.

When you enable this service, you can access bonus content including gaming extras and movie trailers courtesy of the handheld console’s integrated Wi-Fi connectivity in addition to its new SpotPass, instant share feature. Apart from that, Best Buy customers will also be in line to receive special offers via the in-store service.

A Best Buy statement reads, “We want our customers to fully tap into the potential of their Nintendo 3DS device, so we’re pleased to offer free access to special Wi-Fi and SpotPass content in-store.” Will this nugget of information nudge you to make a 3DS purchase anytime soon?

ThinkFlood RedEye app gives Android a rare universal remote

ThinkFlood gave Android owners rare access to a universal remote app through a beta version of RedEye for Android. Much like the iPhone version, it can steer either the regular Wi-Fi using RedEye or a RedEye Pro and send both raw and programmed IR commands to home theater gear, including multi device tasks like switching on a TV and starting a movie player. It works with at least Android 1.6 on phones and scales up to Android 3.0 tablets.
The beta version faces several limitations, most of which are due to Android fragmentation. App users can't try the RedEye mini since the company both needs to verify whether there are problems with certain phones' headphone jacks. Owners also need to have an Android phone that allows non-Market apps for the beta, which rules out most AT&T phones until the company pushes out more of its non-Market Android updates. Five HTC phones, including the Aria, Desire, Evo 4G, Hero, and myTouch Slide, don't support Wi-fI multicasting and need to talk to the Redeye directly by IP address.

The RedEye mini might also not work at all on Android, as Java may be too slow to keep up with the live audio processing that iOS can do in native code, ThinkFlood said.

Getting set up will for now need an iOS device, though on-Android setup is coming later. Android phones that haven't been rooted can't usually get on to ad hoc Wi-Fi like an iPhone and have to talk to the RedEye on an infrastructure Wi-Fi network that would need an iPhone or iPod's help first. Universal remote support has been uncommon on Android for these reasons but is expected to get easier with some devices through Google's Android@Home initiative.

Microsoft buys Skype for $8.5b for Xbox, Windows Phone

Microsoft on Tuesday confirmed rumors and said it would buy Skype for $8.5 billion. The mutually approved deal will see Skype's voice and video chat help out platforms like the Xbox 360 and its Kinect camera as well as Windows Phone. Outlook and Microsoft's corporate communication system Lync would also get help, Microsoft said.
The Windows developer insisted it would still "invest in and support" Skype for non-Microsoft platforms. Skype chief Tony Bates would head up a new group inside Microsoft, the Skype Division, and would talk directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Government approval for the deal is expected before the end of 2011.

Microsoft's acquisition is its largest to date and has already drawn criticism for the potential impact it could have on voice over IP. Despite its promises, Microsoft would have a financial interest in discouraging support for Android, iOS, and the Mac. It might also prefer to support the Xbox 360 over built-in Skype support in TVs from Panasonic and others.

New MacBook Air with Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt in June/July?

New MacBook Air with Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt in June/July?
Apple has thrown in Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors and Thunderbolt into their MacBook Pro lineup and iMac lineup, so what’s left is the MacBook and MacBook Air. According to DigiTimes, Apple is gearing up now and may receive shipment of the refreshed paper laptops in late May ahead of a June or July launch.

The MacBook Air right now is using 10W and 17W Core 2 Duos, so hopefully Apple will be able to squeeze in the new 17W mobile processors from Intel, which makes them head-to-head with Samsung’s new 9-Series laptops. This is so interesting!

Additionally, DigiTimes says Quanta will continue to assemble Apple’s ultra-portable laptops, with Simplo Technology and Dynapack supplying the battery packs. Fancy a superslim MacBook Air powered by Intel Core i7?
